You cannot survive for more than a few minutes without oxygen, compared to days without water and weeks without food. This shows just how essential and critical oxygen is to live.
So where does that oxygen come from? Trees are part of the answer. As they grow, they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the atmosphere, the same oxygen our bodies depend on with every breath.
Trees also provide shade, help protect soil, improve the air around them, and create food and shelter for wildlife. Because trees take years to grow and mature, every tree planted today is an investment in a healthier future.
The benefits we hope to see tomorrow begin with the trees we plant and care for today.
That is where Sumi Foundation comes in.
Our commitment is clear: Planting 50,000+ trees across Sri Lanka every year.
Planting 50,000+ trees is only the beginning. As our work grows, we want that number to grow with it, so that thousands of trees planted today can continue growing, giving back, and becoming part of Sri Lanka’s landscape for years to come.
Planting 50,000+ trees starts with one tree at a time.
Our work begins in our own nursery in Sri Lanka, where we raise seeds into young saplings ready for planting.
Right now, Sumi Foundation works with four kinds of trees: Beech, Tamarind, Teak, and Neem. We also bring in ready-to-plant saplings from other nurseries when additional trees are needed.
When the saplings are ready, our team takes them to planting sites across Sri Lanka. Much of our work supports reforestation, while we also plant trees near schools, homes, and within local communities.
Where the ground allows, we use powered drilling equipment to prepare planting holes instead of digging each one by hand. This helps us prepare larger planting areas more quickly before each sapling is placed into the ground.
Our work continues after planting. We water and care for the young trees while they become established, giving them the support they need to take root and keep growing.
Not every suitable planting area is easy to reach from the ground. For those harder-to-access places, Sumi Foundation uses drones to carry and release seeds from above, helping us reach land that would be difficult to cover on foot and extend our reforestation work across more areas.
