Since 2009, our journey has been deeply rooted in philanthropic efforts across Sri Lanka. In 2010, we took a significant step by officially registering as a not-for-profit organization named Lumen Home in Sri Lanka.
OUR WHY:
The Future Needs More Trees
As we looked at how Sumi Foundation could continue giving back to Sri Lanka, we began thinking about another part of the country’s future: its natural environment. Sri Lanka is home to remarkable biodiversity, with its trees, forests, and natural habitats supporting wildlife and many other forms of life. We saw caring for these surroundings as another way our work could contribute.
Trees can remain in a place for decades, offering shade and shelter while becoming part of the habitat’s wildlife depends on. The lasting benefits trees provide for years and even generations after planting made them a natural focus for the next chapter of Sumi Foundation’s work.
OUR MISSION:
Growing Trees for a Greener Sri Lanka
Sumi Foundation was created to put that purpose into action. By focusing on growing, planting, and caring for trees, we began building another practical way for Sumi Foundation to give back to Sri Lanka and its natural environment.
Our work is centered largely on reforestation, while also bringing trees into other places where they can grow and contribute to their surroundings. Our mission is simple: grow trees, plant them, care for them, and help more of them become part of Sri Lanka’s natural environment.
HONOURING A LEGACY:
The Formation of Sumi Foundation
In 2024, we rebranded Lumen Home to Sumi Foundation, a name honouring the memory of the late Sumethirai Nandhakumaran (Sumi). Her compassion, generosity, and commitment to helping others continue to inspire our work. Through Sumi Foundation, we carry her legacy forward through our commitment to education and the environment.
Expanding
Our Reach
Our vision goes beyond the work we do today. As Sumi Foundation grows, we want to plant more trees, reach more parts of Sri Lanka, and continue finding practical ways to expand our impact on a larger scale. We want to build on what we have started and continue giving back to the country and its environment.
