WHAT WE DO:
From Seeds to Trees Across Sri Lanka
At Sumi Foundation, we grow and plant trees across Sri Lanka. Our work covers each stage, from seeds to raising saplings in our own nursery and preparing planting sites, continued care, and sharing trees with schools and local communities and reforestation.
Our Commitment:
Planting 50,000+ Trees Every Year.
Planting 50,000+ trees each year is where our commitment begins. Reaching that goal requires careful planning at every stage and finding practical, efficient ways to grow, prepare, plant, and care for more trees across Sri Lanka.
Where Our Trees Begin
Sumi Foundation has its own nursery, where we grow young trees for planting. We currently work with four types of trees: Beech, Tamarind, Teak, and Neem. Some begin with us as seeds, while others come to us as ready-to-plant saplings from external nurseries when additional trees are needed.
For the trees that start with us, it begins with a seed. The seeds are grown in our nursery until they develop into young saplings. Once ready for planting, the saplings are taken from the nursery to the planting site.
Beyond the Nursery
Once the saplings are ready, the next step is to get them into the ground. Much of our planting supports reforestation, while we also bring trees to homes, schools, and local communities.
Where the site allows, our team uses a powered drilling machine to prepare planting holes instead of digging each one by hand. This allows many holes to be prepared much faster, helping the team move through larger planting areas more efficiently before each sapling is placed into the ground.
Where we plant can also shape how a project comes together. In some locations, this means working with the Road Development Authority (RDA) before planting begins. Across these different settings, the goal remains the same: to put more trees in places where they have room to grow.
From Sky to Soil
Sumi Foundation is also working with drone technology to support reforestation. We are adapting a drone to carry and release seeds over suitable areas, helping us reach places that can be harder to cover from the ground.
Drones will support the planting we already do, not replace it. They give us another way to spread seeds across larger or harder-to-reach areas and help us plant more efficiently.
More Trees. More Possibilities.
Our impact can reach further when others take part. We provide trees and saplings to schools and local communities, giving them the opportunity to plant and care for them in their own surroundings.
Not every tree has to be planted by our team to be part of what Sumi Foundation is working toward. Each tree we share creates another opportunity for planting to continue beyond our own projects, helping more trees to take root and thrive across Sri Lanka.
